Support for Magento 1 officially ended on June 30th. In this article, we outline the implications of the Magento 1 end-of-life and the transition to Magento 2.

Implications for Magento 1 Users

The end of service means that new bugs no longer receive patches from Adobe, and users are responsible for their own security moving forward.

If you still use Magento 1, download the extensions that you wish to keep. Following June 7th, Magento plans to remove the extensions. A month later on August 6th, they will delete the M1 extensions from their repository.

Magento recently published an End of Software Support FAQ which includes further details about  Magento’s published End of Support date for all versions of Magento Open Source.

Important Implications for Magento 1 users after the end of support:

  1. PCI DSS compliance responsibilities will increase, potentially limiting users' ability to process credit card payments
  2. Increased threat of outside actors both attacking sites and breaching security
  3. The costs of support will go up while qualified maintenance resources will go down
  4. Inability to access new Magento Commerce technologies and capabilities
  5. Magento will remove marketplace extensions exclusive to unsupported versions of Magento Open Source 1

Transition to Magento 2

Magento 2 is the best option for launching a successful eCommerce site. Thousands of merchants already made the shift since M1 started a long phase-out in 2015. Magento 2 incorporated many of the popular Magento 1 extensions as stock integrations. For this reason, M2 promotes the term “out-of-the-box features.” Out-of-the-box includes a lot of different integrations - all of them help you transition to a high-functioning eCommerce platform. The enhanced performance of Magento 2, as a result, supplies your business with the flexibility and agility to provide exceptional customer experiences and heightened sales outcomes from the start.

The Magento 2 eCommerce platform offers your team an easier way to manage your business online. The Magento 2 platform allows you to empower your team with drag and drop functionality. You can also take advantage of M2 UX designs, which give your business the chance to easily change the way customers interact with you. Of course, many other features are available to make your transition easier. To get an assessment about transitioning from Magento Open Source to Magento 2, follow this link

Vaimo’s Quick Launch Accelerator

In the current climate, starting with a fully-customised site might turn into a nightmare. The Magento 2 platform lends itself well to a quick launch approach and getting your website up to tip-top shape through multiple launch phases. Instead of focusing on endless customisation from the get-go, you can instead launch quickly on Magento Commerce and examine how eCommerce works for your business. The acquired knowledge from diving into eCommerce reduces risk and affords necessary changes in the scope of the project.

But what happens after launching your eCommerce quick launch? While in the first phase, you can focus on small but vital tasks like getting a product catalogue online. The second phase allows you to expand. For example, you can start focusing on more technical optimisations that didn’t make sense during phase one. Then, you can use the data gathered over the first few weeks and months to improve processes, elevate customer experience, and streamline marketing efforts using the knowledge developed. All of the steps leading you to a full-fledged eCommerce site are cost-effective and allow you to course-correct while remaining operational.
